STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Organized psycho-social and medical support has been given to refugees and displaced persons since the beginning of the war in Croatia and Bosnia. Activities have taken place in Zagreb, the capitol of Croatia, and its surroundings. RCT-IRCT Copenhagen supported the establishment of the IRCT Zagreb Center in 1993. The existence of this Center has helped avoid the stigmatization of tortured victims as psychiatric patients. The clients have a large number of psychological disturbances, as well as normal reactions to abnormal experience and situation.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITES
The IRCT Zagreb is an independent humanitarian non governmental organisation - contribute to the prevention of torture and violence in Croatia.
THE GOALS OF THE CENTER
1) early identification of tortured victims
2) treatment:
- psychological help (crisis intervention counseling, individually and group psycho-therapy)
- medical help (contact with medical institution)
- social help (social security, accommodation, employment, contact with authorities)
3) Education and training of health professionals in the medical, social, legal, and ethical aspect of torture
4) Prevention of torture
- dissemination of information on torture
- public awareness of the issue of torture
- organization and participation in conferences
5) Collaboration with institutions which work in the same field
It is well known that there are after-effects of torture many years after the infliction of torture. The worst after-effects of torture are psychological, and need long term therapy in order to be resolved
